I guess in some ways I feel like the aroha I hold for wild places, or in my case, the Ruahine, is maybe spilling out into other awareness but yet still very connected to the original meaning. Not sure if that makes sense, but it is all I can get to in this moment.
I still miss the mountains and am looking forward to returning very soon :). Kia ora for your salutations on the 100th post. It represents something, not quite sure what, but something.
Kia kaha e hoa.
Aroha,
RobbRuahineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09398484733805119294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699436745323436303.post-1058698719466317122012-02-16T06:29:12.793+13:002012-02-16T06:29:12.793+13:00Robb:

You're so right about the mainstream media spouting government propaganda -- it's so much easier for lazy journalists than actually doing research and having to think deeply about issues. I reached the same conclusion after starting to read alternative news sources and comparing them with the TV "News". Congratulations on being a voice for the other side here--a citizen journalist. I'd like to see more of this in future especially explaining NZ issues which we in the west don't know much about, though we do have the exact same situation here with First Nations struggling for their treaty rights for years and years.

And it's not only first nations but ANYONE protesting government and big business led actions that get lambasted in the media and even arrested and jailed -- just look at what's been happening to the Occupy folks all over North America.

Where we can, and when we can let's use our voices for what we know is right.

Also congratulations on your 100th post!

Very adorable picture of Charlie and friend here.

:)vegetablejhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15449145190852647832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699436745323436303.post-73096572244247583032012-02-12T21:09:44.291+13:002012-02-12T21:09:44.291+13:00Kia ora Bob,

I feel a bit like having been handed a bat but in a dimly lit room where in a brawl you are not quite sure who is friend or foe, so swinging it blindly or wantonly can hurt those we care for as well. And I also have enough history to know when not to waste those swings on an unworthy opponent.
Cheers,
RobbRuahineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09398484733805119294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699436745323436303.post-54692030678148462492012-02-12T19:10:48.367+13:002012-02-12T19:10:48.367+13:00Kia ora Lost Coyote,

All I will write right here is that every New Zealander should strive to attend Waitangi at least one time in their life. It is interesting that so many make the pilgrimage to Gallipoli, the marking of a colonial war upon territory not our own, yet so few honour what is supposed to be the birthplace of New Zealand itself.
You are always welcome here in our whare e hoa. This is a story that does not get told properly here in New Zealand, by our government, by our institutions, and certainly by the media. I saw that with my own eyes pried wide open throughout this journey. Hope you are well e hoa. How are the knees and when are your returning to Aotearoa? I've learnt a lot from it.

Although southern NZ was populated in the south first, by Maori and then whalers/sealers, and their legacy is rich in stories, they drifted north to warmer climes and what's left today, in my mind at least, is a sort of cultural/historical gap bereft of the richness of the humanity you describe.

I'm glad it's alive and well and more healthily prevalent up your end of the island.

Reading and rereading your post I'm struck by two things: that respect was high on a two way street as the whalers/sealers traded, and yet the graciousness and wisdom evident was blatantly abused by the colonists who came later.

Well that's how it seems to me - and notably in my schooling so much, too much in fact, was omitted in regards to NZ's history.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers

DonaldDonaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02514655834785883306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699436745323436303.post-59792004460017134322012-02-09T20:20:47.562+13:002012-02-09T20:20:47.562+13:00Brilliant piece of sincere, moving and emotional w...Brilliant piece of sincere, moving and emotional writing. Your reference to Tiriti and placing it alongside the Bible, the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and so on, is a good one. I have had a quick read of your post Robb, and will come back to it tonight when I have more time. In the eightgies I went through many emotional years grappling with the issues of Maori and the Tresty, and the injustices metted out against them. The sad sorry of the way Maori were manipulated and felt they had to prove they were " twice as good as Pakehas to be accepted back in their very own land."

My heart cries oiut for all the injustices and pain that affected so many people.Bob McKerrow - Wayfarerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13832128768908667724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699436745323436303.post-88780454611901623612012-02-09T17:15:28.017+13:002012-02-09T17:15:28.017+13:00I don't know much of the background here, but ...I don't know much of the background here, but this was fascinating nonetheless.
